Double Bass Concerto – Tribute to L. E. Larsson

We would like to invite you to the next Music Without Borders concert – a tribute to L.E. Larsson. The premiere of a double bass concert in the Czech Republic is not so easy to hear. Swedish music is also scarce, and yet it is very nice, especially this romantic one. The event takes place under the auspices of the Swedish Ambassador and again in the beautiful surroundings of the Baroque Dominican Refectory, Jilská Street, Prague 1. Reservation is possible at the links below. It is organized as part of the Music without Borders chamber concert series by the Czech Roots Association and we are happy to extend the invitation.

SWEDISH CONCERT or Tribute to Lars Erik Larsson

2 June – 7 p.m.

Baroque Refectory of the Dominican Monastery, Jilská 7a, Prague 1

Martinů Strings Prague Jaroslav Šonský – conductor (Sweden/Czech Republic) Jan Smažík – double bass Lars Erik LARSSON – Romance Carl NIELSEN – Serenade for string orchestra – Op. 1 Lars Erik LARSSON – Concertino for double bass Op. 45 – Czech premiere Franz SCHUBERT – Death and the Maiden – 1st movement

The music of Lars Erik Larsson, a Swedish composer of the late Romantic period, is hardly known in this country. However, it is worth attention for its specific beauty and inspiration from Swedish nature. Larsson’s double bass concerto will be performed in the Czech Republic for the very first time by the excellent double bassist Jan Smažík, a member of the National Theatre Orchestra in Prague. The concert will be accompanied by the romantic Serenade for Strings by the most important Danish composer Carl Nielsen. It will then conclude with a movement from the large-scale composition by F. Schubert, the famous and enchanting “Death and the Maiden”.

Jaroslav Šonský is a Czech violin virtuoso and music manager who lives permanently in Sweden but often works in Prague. Here he leads his string ensemble of excellent quality, Martinů Strings Prague, which he commutes from Sweden to join. Jaroslav Šonský intensively promotes Czech music abroad, and Nordic music here in the Czech Republic, and often does almost pioneering work with Martinů Strings Prague, as many works by Nordic composers are not performed in this country at all. This is also the case with Carl Nielsen’s Serenade for String Orchestra, which Jaroslav Šonský and his ensemble performed in its Czech premiere in 2015 and which will be performed for only the second time at the concert on 2 June. The same is true of the works of L.E. Larsson, the late romantic Swedish composer, whose unique double bass concerto will be performed in its Czech premiere, and we will also enjoy the popular Larsson Romance, which all Swedes love but few in the Czech Republic have heard. The concert is held under the auspices of the Ambassador of Sweden, H.E. Victoria Li.
