Barack Obama and his mark on American politics, culture and society

We have prepared an interesting evening – with the Americanist Mr. Martin Svoboda. You may know him from his translation for the ARGO publishing house, where his book The Promised Land, a memoir by Barack Obama was published. Martin studied English and has long been interested in US politics. There were several topics on offer, such as why Donald Trump and later Joe Biden were elected. We also considered comments on the current situation with regard to NATO and Ukraine/Russia, Covid, and the US abortion controversy. However, in the end, a presentation was agreed to follow on from the aforementioned book – “Barack Obama and his mark on American politics, culture and society”.

The presentation will briefly introduce the life and political career of Barack Obama, the 44th President of the United States, and will focus on three major domestic political issues: the 2008 economic crisis and its resolution, health care reform and the climate bill; and three foreign policy issues: the war in Afghanistan, a ballooning Russia, and the Arab Spring. He will also touch on race relations in America, personnel changes on the Supreme Court, and efforts to contain China through the international trade system.

Martin Svoboda (1975) studied English and Bohemia at Palacký University in Olomouc, where he also received a PhD in linguistics. He studied at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, where he also taught Czech to the descendants of Czech settlers. He worked as a translator and editor for the publishing house Argo. He now works in the media department of People in Need, continuing to translate fiction and comics.

Apart from the introductory presentation, the evening will be conceived as a discussion, and we expect an interesting discussion. The aforementioned book will be available and available for purchase at the event.

You can sign up for in-person or online attendance by registering for the event below. For those who come in person, there will be extra refreshments.

Looking forward to it!
